A Speech by His Excellency Professor Abdullah Abdurrahman Al-Othman, Rector of King Saud University at the International Conference for Communication Technologies and Social Change

At the beginning of my speech, I would like to warmly welcome the participants in the Communication Technologies and Social Change Conference, which is organized by the Media Department at the College of Arts at King Saud University including faculty members, experts, media men, technicians and academics in order to keep pace with the international media and technological changes. The organization of this conference comes in line with the increasing attention being paid to technology and media in view of the great role they play in our life as two of the most important pillars of sustainable development.  
On this occasion, I would like to extend my deep sense of gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz for their approval to convene this conference and for their support and sponsorship. This support indicates the great attention the rulers of this country pay to the educational and scientific sectors and the activation of their role to serve the programs of comprehensive development based on sound scientific foundations. Moreover, the support of this conference comes as an extension of the efforts exerted by our wise leadership to host technology and keep pace with its latest developments.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques was fully aware about the importance and significant role of technology in accelerating the process of construction and economic renaissance. Therefore, he directed the relevant authorities to allocate a big budget to host technology at the national level and use it in the various fields of development. Our country has since then continued to keep pace with the latest technological and information new developments. Such developments enabled the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to occupy a prominent economic and political position. This conference is indeed considered one of the fruits of the directions of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques; and it comes within the framework of the attention paid to using technology in the various fields of construction. In fact, media is one of the most significant elements of social, political and economic renaissance because it plays a significant role in achieving stability and security in all aspects of life. When the medial is supported by modern technology, then it will be capable of meeting the aspirations of the leadership and the embodiment of national ambitions.

King Saud University stands at the top of the rising educational edifices in our beloved Kingdom. It has always taken the leading position in such initiatives and it is keen on keeping pace with the new developments, organizing conferences, encouraging researchers to realize the expected shifts to promote university education and encouraging colleges to conduct research that support the national economy. There are highly qualified researchers from inside and outside the kingdom who participate in this important technological conference which consists of a collection of issues and significant contributions in the field of communication technology. This would enhance the realization of the expected goals and results which will be positively reflected on the development of media in general and the Media Department at the College of Arts in particular. In fact, this department always takes marvelous initiatives, organizes a number of activities and the contribution of its faculty members gives a clear indication about the department's interaction and involvement in the university vision which is heading towards  international scientific pioneering and vigorously contributing in building a knowledge based society.
To this end, King Saud University previously established a specialized Administration for Knowledge Exchange and Technology Transfer and launched ambitious developmental programs while it acts rapidly to own the latest technology in order to keep abreast with the rapid development in the world. The university endeavors to use all the means available to activate its efforts that are aimed at realizing creativity and distinctiveness in performance to build national economy that is based on knowledge. This direction goes hand in hand with the direction of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his Crown Price.

This conference also comes to encourage faculty members, researchers and students to be creative and distinguished in their fields to build the knowledge based society, which is considered one of the necessities and one of the basic pillars to enter into international pioneering. Moreover, the conference aims at providing the opportunity and conducive climate for those who work in the media and technology field including academics and professionals to exchange experiences and views about the challenges that face this sector in the Kingdom and to keep abreast with the technological and media advancement witnessed by the world. This would enable them to face these challenges and move forward to future horizons after equipping themselves for the building process.

This great effort by the Media Department at the College of Arts, is indeed a sincere effort that comes in harmony with the vision educational progress and the objectives of development in our country; and embodies the ambitions aimed at equipping ourselves with technology when we talk the language of modern age. This matter has prompted the rulers of this country to support these, programs, activities and efforts that look forward to the future and strengthen the plans of comprehensive development by means of knowledge and science.
Once again, I would like to thank all those who participated in producing this great national work and all those who participated in the activities and endeavored to achieve the success of this communication technology conference that acquires its importance from taking the language of modern age and from the great attention paid by the rulers of this country and their keenness on keeping abreast with international development and progress.
