More than 75 research papers will be discussed in the first global conference of communication technology and social change.The conference is organized by Media department, college of Arts, King Saud University. The first global conference of communication technology and social change will review a number of research work papers that are related to basic issues of the conference, especially those concerning media, technological aspects, society problems as well as their influences on society movement. During three days, the conference sessions will discuss about 80 research papers which have been prepared by specialists, academics and professionals in different fields. To shed light on the components of the conference we are going to review a brief hints on these research papers and mention the experts who conduct accurate, important and high- level research papers which consolidate the importance of this conference. From these research papers, there is a paper with the title: Virtual Communities on the Internet( Dr. Rida A/wahid amin) This paper tries to find answers to many questions concerning the concept of virtual communities on the internet and Arab contribution on virtual communities on internet as well as how this concept agrees with social and cultural values. Sample from Arab Virtual communities was analyzed by using analysis of systems to study Media location on the internet. There is a paper about The limits of media in view of the digital networks revolution (Dr. Yahya Alyahyawi) The paper displays the challenges that face traditional media and how to adapt to this new nature of digital networks, and requirement of a society that has become precise in its needs, swift in its interaction with news, information and accurate in its choices. Another paper about The disruptive and radical potentials of innovations in communication technology ( Dr. Michael Latzer) The paper focuses on particular concepts underlying disruptive technologies and radical innovations for assessing the impact of mobile IP network innovations such as WiFi, WiMAX ,mesh technologies and ad hoc networks. As for the paperunder the title:The Relationships between the Journalists and PR practitioners and the Use of New Technology ( Dr. Alsyed Bakheet Mohammad Dirweesh), it aims to examine the attitude of the journalists and PR practitioners in the UAE towards the use of new technology in their communication with each other. It seeks to define how they use the new technology, their perceptions of the new technology and whether they consider it beneficial, professional, credible and ethical compared with traditional media. In the conference there is a research on The relation between the communication revolution and the preservation of the cultural identity of the Arabs: A comparative study of Egyptian and Emirati youth ( Dr. Thurya Ahmed Albadawi). The study is based on the concept of construction of meaning which in turn is related to the constructivism approach which deals with the perception and understanding of others, one's self, as well as relationships. It also presumes that the perception of human beings of events and human and social phenomena is a relative perception. Dr. Suleiman Saleh has a presentation about the media and building an Arab society of knowledge. The study aims to lay the preliminary foundation towards building a new Islamic knowledge community. The paper asks some questions such as how can we build such a community? How can we use the media in building an industry with Arabian and Islamic content? How can we connect media to education, and use this connection to build an Islamic community of knowledge and then formulate an economy of knowledge as apposed to an economy of information. The researcher Dishen bin Mohammad Algahtani will introduce a paper on: Internet Blogs and its relationship to freedom of opinion and expression. The paper considers the web log or blog as the most popular among the internet users because blogs are considered as a means for expressing, communicating, propagandizing and advertising whether that be for individuals or groups. It is also viewed web log as a tool for social networking which can motivate its users to join and adjust with content management technologies for satisfying their personal needs for developing a vibrant virtual community. There is a paper about The age of information, and its social effects: The socio-cultural contents and indications will be presented by ( Dr. Bouhania Qawi). The paper tries to look at the communication effects of this phenomenon and discusses a conceptual introduction to the age of information , the basic effects and indicators of this age. The paper also discusses a futuristic look at the importance of secondary and fringe cultures. Also there is a paper on Modern communication technologies: between acceptance and rejection (By. Prince Muhammad Bin Saud Bin Khalid Bin Saud). The study aims to discuss a historical overview of how varies societies accepted innovative communication technologies ( printing, telephony, radio). The paper discusses the characteristics of the Saudi community in dealing with modern communication technologies. There is a paper about Origins of the criticism of Communication Technology and its New Development in the Internet Age ( Jay Keen). The paper discusses comprehensively the positive roles that communication technologies play in the development of mass media, as well as their negative influences in the internet age, such as the expansion of the information gap, and internet violence. One of the important papers is the role of communication technology in supporting social and economic development By dr. Mustafa Mahmoud Mohammad. The paper tries to answer the following question: Can communication and information technologies support social and economic development in Arab countries including setting up local electronic communities? The paper also issues the different concepts of communication and information technologies and preparing the proper infrastructure for them. A paper about Arabic language on the satellite channels: realities, challenges and aspirations ( Dr.Ajjgo Ali ). The conference provides very important papers such as Communication Technology and social change: development perspectives of informatics (Dr. Wael Ismael Hassan).The study tries to discuss and survey the technological aspects of communication technology by looking into Bell's theory of post- industrial societies. This theory explains the development of a certain society into a society of informatics, and surveys the aspects of social changes in such a society. The paper about Social presence in the virtual society: A sociological perspective by (Dr. Ahmed Falah Al amoush). The paper attempts to identify social existence in the virtual world through denoting the concept of virtual communities and social networks (Face book, My apace, and similar internet sites) and network of the virtual world (second life, Google lively, and similar sites). One of the researches of media is the paper on: The role of the media in protecting the Arab value system (by Dr. Daleela Mubaraki) The paper talks about the media which becomes useless when discussing the value system of Arabs, without visualizing the essential controls for achieving this especially when one considers that its role is complementary, sometimes even competitive, to the role of school and the family. The paper asks about what kind of media do we want for setting up security of ideas and thoughts. There is a research about The Yemeni audience's perception of the relative importance of international issues, as reflected in satellite news channels: Applied study on Al-Jazeera channel ( by Dr. Mohammad A/wahab Kaffi) The study tries to answer the question about the role of the news channels in affecting the knowledge of the (Yemeni) audiences of international issues and its different angles. The paper about The role of communicating, in strengthening or usurping national identity is the presentation of Dr. Khaleel Ahmed Khaleel.This study highlights certain issues including the problems of social communication in the Arab world; oral communication and story telling identity; information communication; the authority of media in relation to the diversity of the Arab tongue; and the major and minor identities of a society. There is a research about Communication media: Are they a substitute or complementary to national identity (By Dr. Tariq Khaleel). The study aims to study a community of Arab bloggers, and tries to discover the role played by these blogs where bloggers register their views, and express their concerns and the concerns of the society, or even find themselves. One of the papers is on New Technology and Public Diplomacy: opportunities in bridging the Global Divine(By Dr. Jerjory Baen) This paper will address the role of new technology as an important emerging communication tool used by advocates of public diplomacy in their attempt to bridge the gaps within the global community. There is also a paper about Reflections on the power point – A multi-disciplinary discussion of where the internet and communication management meet. The paper discusses how internet based technologies influence the power inherent is these relationships (by Dr.Edward Downes). The presentation of Dr. Mohammad Shaheed Allah is about Women Empowerment and Poverty Reduction through the Mobile Phone: An examination of Village pay phone operations of Grameen bank in Bangladesh.The paper highlights the women's experiences and brings findings that don't correspond fully to previous research of this program, and that don't support the tendency of technological optimism in development programs. Another paper about The factors affecting the use of the Arab girl, of the Internet ( Dr. Azza A/azeez Osman). The importance of this study stems from the fact that previous studies had not touched the factors that influence the use of (young) girl specifically, of the internet. Also the study concentrates on two different societies, the Saudi community which is conservative, and the Egyptian society which more liberal. On the side of media, there is a paper about the effect of satellite TV on the social values of the youth: The Algerian University youth as an example (Dr. Raheema Altayb Aiesany). The paper comes to answer the questions about the role which the channels play in strengthening or changing the values of the youth and also how these channels change the social values of the youth. The researcher Abullah A/Rahman Almohaisin will present a paper about The Cinema and its role in bolstering national Identity: Current state of the current state of Saudi cinema. The study tries to define cinema as an art and a tool of cultural expression. Also it explains the relationship between cinema and national identity and details the current state of Saudi cinema. A look into information communication, and its effect on cultural identity, is a paper which will be presented by Dr. Alarabi Farahati. The paper tries to prove that communicating or communication is a part of a human being's identity. He can't but stay "in touch" and relationship and culture is a natural part of him, and he has endeavored and still striving to produce modes of relationships with others, whether of his kind or even those who are not of his kind. One of the communicative, technological and social researches is about choosing a marriage partner, between the Islamic model and the personal preference of each partner: An analysis of marriage proposals on satellite channels By Dr. Siham Ahmed AlAzeb. The aim of the study is to identify the demographic characteristics of the two partners and the nature of preferred qualities which the two partners are looking for in each other. The paper also tries to identify the priorities of each partner. There is a paper about The relationship between the use of the internet, and social alienation: A field study on a sample of Saudi youth in Riyadh ( Dr. Mohammad bin Sulieman Alsubahy). The study derives its importance from the fact that the use of the internet amongst the youth has grown tremendously. Also because of the communicative aspects it has, features which have created for them a "virtual" world in a way that has impacted negatively on some of their social values. The importance of this study stems from the following: Not many papers on the relationship between the internet and human rights have been published. The many features the internet enjoys, and which make it more amenable to human rights activities compared to other means, including its privacy, its immediacy, its low costs and its spread. The conference also includes a paper about Saudis and Modernization: the status of communication within democracy by Dr. Saber Haris Mohammad. The study compares the different roles of mass communication, group communication, and modern communications, in supporting democratic modernization in Saudi Arabia, using the municipality elections of 2005 as a case in point. There is a technological paper under the title; Modern communication technologies and futuristic impacts: Virtual media as a model.( Hassan AlSudany) This paper aims to shed light on the concept and implementations of virtual media which becomes a new phenomenon not only in communication and media studies, but in all the surrounding fields of knowledge. Dr. saed Al saddeegy will present a paper about The Internet and the Transformation of Public Space. The study tries to highlight that new information and communication technologies, especially the internet, have essentially created a new public space or a "new transnational realm of civil society". The internet has increasingly become a virtual agora by creating a new public cyberspace which by definition consists of intense communication processes. On the digital aspects, there is a paper under the title National factors related to digital division after Soviet regime. The study points out the active spread of information through new communication technologies after the Soviet Regime. There is also a paper about development of uses of the mobile in the Saudi Arabia by Dr. Fawaz Al dikhayel. The study shows and explains the use of the mobile in Saudi Arabia and anew job openings. The representation of Dr. AlSaed Awashriya is about Modern communication technology, between the shortening and widening of the information divine. According to the paper, information divine is a reality that can not be denied, however it is initially not a technical one, because technology was always and will remain a product of the society. There is an important paper under the title: The Future of cultural diversity in view of media globalization. The paper confirms that all human groups enjoy their cultural distinctness. This conservation of culture leads to cultural diversity and multiplicity. In that way, cultural diversity has become part and parcel of the human being's "human rights". There is a paper about the information community and the appearance of new communication modes in Arab communities. (Dr. Yammeen Bouhan ). The paper aims to shed light on the latest modes of communication, and the way in which it is affecting the process of communication as a whole. It also shows the extent to which Arab communities have been affected by these new technologies of media and communication. Dr. Mohammad Hamdan will present a paper about Communication technology and the media and cultural sovereignty of a state. The paper explains that developing countries, since the end of the sixties and after achieving independence had realized the importance of economic, cultural and media freedom. There is no doubt that liberalizing national media, and developing it, a very important part of the struggle for political and economic as well as social independence. The effect of the new media variables on the Saudi society is a paper of the researcher A/AlRahman bin Nami AlMutairi. The paper concentrates on understanding the social changes which this media revolution has brought upon the society in Saudi Arabia. There is a paper about New Media Events: Rethinking Citizen Journalism, China, and the Global South. The researcher says, conceptually new media event is not just public events transmitted through new media forms such as the internet or mobile phone. It is more fundamentally about the involvement of none- elite citizen journalists in the news – making and news dissemination process and the hybridization of developmental journalism with the struggle for press freedom within the digitized and enlarged media ecology of the twenty-first century. There is also a paper about the media, and challenges facing less fortune countries (Dr. Mohammad Bukhari) the paper deals with traditional media outlets and the challenges facing states after the advent of globalization and the so –called information community. The role of modern communication technologies in managing crises ( Dr. Bin Dawod Mohammad Ibrahem). The paper talks about the current state of the Arab world and the challenges it faces in terms of media and communication technologies. There is a paper about the effect of modern communication technologies on the performance of the international reporter working for news agencies, and its relation to social change (Dr. Hala Kamal Ahmed). The study aims to investigate the real role played by international reporters in changing the society, in view of the present information revolution and the effect of this communication technology on the nature of the performance of these reporters and the flow of free news .Dr. Eisa A/ Albagi Musa will discuss a paper about the effects of interactive communication through new media on the awareness of university students regarding issues of political reform studying the case of democratic transformation in Egypt. the study aims to identify the effects of interactive communications, using these latest media on the spread of awareness amongst college students regarding political issues ,taking the case in Egypt and the democratic transformation taking place there as an example. Dr. Saad Bin Abdullah AlRashed will present a paper about the internet as a new health information source in developing countries. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential role of the internet in promoting health development in developing countries and will explore the internet in promoting developing countries. There is a paper about creating multi-tone electronic headphones. There is a paper about Communication revolution and identity struggle (Dr. Munawera Bejom Mony). The purpose of the paper is to discuss and find solutions for the identity struggle of the younger generation, within the current communication revolution .Dr. Idries Lackreeny will participate with a paper about the electronic web logs and how these electronic logs are used intensively and widely in last few years. And about shaping electronic public opinion, Dr. Mutaib bin Shadeed is going to suggest answers to questions such as what do we mean by electronic public opinion and what are the negative and positive aspects of electronic public opinion. On the use of internet by journalists, Dr. Mohammand bin Ali Alsuweed is going to present a paper about the use of the internet ,by journalists, and how it influences their dependence on other sources. The study concentrates on a certain group that works in the field of journalism, have an effective presence in newspaper content and have an important influence on public opinion, namely the writers of columns and articles in newspapers. Dr. Ibrahim Ismael Abdo is the researcher who is going to present a paper about Modern communication technologies and the cultural identity of the youth in the Arab society: A study in the defining limits, and the relative global dimensions. The study aims amongst other things, to shed light on previous treaties that dealt essentially with the subject of communication technologies and cultural identity of the youth in the Arab world and the topics relative to this study. The Theme Technology and Identity in Global news is a paper which will be presented by Dr. Oliver Boyd. The paper will consider the implication of changing communication technologies for the global distribution of information products that we commonly call "news". Also the paper will discuss their relevance to our understanding of shifting patterns of global power. Dr. Bashar A/Rahman is going to present a paper about Frequency of use, by Yemen women, of Arab satellite film channels, and the extent of satisfaction achieved. The study tries to discover the types of exposure of Yemeni woman to Arab satellite films channels, the reasons behind the using of these channels, and finally how sated they feel after being exposed. The study will define the virtual community and its social and technological aspects .There is a paper which concerns Utilizing Information and telecommunication technologies to fight illiteracy. The paper will be presented by Dr. Ghada bint Abdulla AlAmudi. The paper tries to benefit from previous experiences of other countries that had looked to utilize information and communication technology to fight ignorance amongst the poorer classes, so that plans may be put in place to overcome the biggest problem of contemporary development –ignorance. The researcher Iman Azmy is going to participate with a paper about Communication Technologies and Cultural Identity: A Duple Impact. The paper provides a critical overview for the definition of new communication technologies and cultural identity in the new era, focusing on the positive as well as negative effects of new communication technologies on people. Electronic communication and the Etiquette is a paper which will be presented by Dr. Abear A/ Aljawad. The paper presents some illustrations and examples and previous negative examples for disadvantages of not using etiquette in electronic communication. Dr. Saad Abdulla Alghanim is going to participate with a paper about Patients' Use of the Internet as a Source for Health Information. The data for this study was collected via questionnaires distributed to adult patients who attended five primary healthcare centers in Riyadh during October 2008.Some of the main results include the following: Of the 963 patients who returned the questionnaires, 258 (26.8%) stated that they used the internet for health information. This study will analyze fully interactive TV, how it works, its features, and its expected effect on advertisement. Dr. Sami Ibrahim Jumaa Al khazandar is going to participate with a paper about Public Opinion Survey Technologies and Journalism Values: Gauging the views of Arab elites towards journalism professional values In Ajazeera Channel. This research surveys the Arab Academic elite – specializing in journalism and political science about their views and attitudes towards a set of professional values in journalism. The survey covered 45 researchers in 19 Arab countries. Dr. obeid bin Saed bin Salim is going to participate with a paper about Uses of the Mobile phones amongst University Students in Oman. The study aims at exploring students' uses and the Gratifications from using mobile phones. Also it investigates the importance of mobile phones amongst other communication tools. Dr. Fawzia AlShidadi is going to participate with a paper about Arab satellite Channels, and the role they play in social change. This paper draws its importance from the fact that, it is a building stone in this volume of knowledge that tries to present scientific indicators of the expected effects of drama works being aired on Arab satellite channels ( and what it contains of social values), on the National and Islamic identity of these communities. Dr. Ashraf Galal Hassan is going to participate with a paper under the tile: The effect of modern communication technology (internet sites-web logs) on the shaping of public opinion in the Arab society. The importance of this study stems from the following: Increasing exposure to electronic sites and web logs (blogs). The increase in the average and nature of criticism being directed at the role played by modern communication technology in its commentary on political and social issues, and finally because of the increase of censorship of traditional media is audience resorted to alternative media. Modern Communication technologies and its educational effects is a paper which will be presented by Dr. AlSaid A/ ALmula ALSaid. The paper is trying to define the modern communication technologies and specifying the positive or negative effects of these technologies that can be of use in the field. The researcher Mohammad Babiker Alawad is going to participate with a paper under the title: Towards a comprehensive approach for analyzing the communication structure of knowledge - based society "viewing the world as a single unit of analyses". This paper is trying to answer the following questions: What are the available choices for analyzing the communication structure of a (knowledge-based society model)? What are the appropriate points of introduction to perform this analysis? What are the basic units and its analysis potential? Dr. Yousif bin Ramadan is going to participate with a paper under the title: Mass Media, Media technology, and the social /cultural dynamics of modern Arab societies: Issues and problems. The study tries to evaluate the real, or hypothetical role of mass media technology, and the relationships it sets up with some strategic sectors of the society, that specially are connected to the political and religious society and to culture. Dr. Alsaed Ashura is going to present a paper under the title: Modern Communication Technology, between the shortening and widening of the Information divide. The paper tries to highlight the information divide as a reality that can not be denied. The paper says the conservation of culture leads to cultural diversity and multiplicity. Finally, there is a paper under the title: Communication Technology and its Impact on Linguistic Identity of Arab World. The paper will be presented by Dr. FadlalRahman siddgy. In recent times, the communication technology has imposed a kind of linguistic homogeneity for "Classic Arabic" over other variations, with newspapers and TV channels predominantly using this standardized form of the Arabic language. The paper will attempt to look into the different dynamics of linguistic identity in the Arab World. |
