The BeginningThe department was founded in 1392 as the first department of mass communication in the Gulf Region. It is considered the most productive in the field of media studies within the Gulf Cooperation Council.
When teaching started, the department had merely two sections: Journalism and Radio and Television. Three years later the Department of Public Relations was opened, and in 1410 the Section of Theatrical Arts was inaugurated. In 1419 teaching in the Master’s program started in three majors: Journalism, Radio and Television, and Public Relations.

Conditions of Admission1. The applicant must be a holder of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or its equivalent in or outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 2. The applicant must have obtained their GCSE or its equivalent no more than five years earlier than the time of their application to the department. The University Council may exempt the applicant from such condition if convincing reasons are given. 3. The applicant must be of good conduct. 4. The applicant must pass any test or personal interview set by the department. 5. The applicant must be medically fit. 6. The applicant must obtain their employer’s approval if they work in the public or private sectors. 7. The applicant must meet any other conditions set by the department and announced at the time of application.

Centers and Units:1. Information Data Center: The center contains a good number of both Arabic and foreign information journals, as well as a collection of books, research articles and references in various information specializations. 2. Information Research Unit: This unit was established in 1408 H; it seeks to encourage research in the information fields and to assess information research papers demanded by official and non-official establishments outside the university. 3. Information Training and Information Production Unit: This was established in 1410 H. to focus on academic training to graduate able and qualified nationals. 4. Conference Organizing Unit: It organizes conferences, symposia, and seminars inside and outside the university campus in all areas of information, in addition to participating in external conferences and preparing for the launching of information, commercial and marketing campaigns for both the public and the private sectors. Television Broadcast and Production Center The Television Broadcast and Production Center was established in 1405 H. and was then called (Audio and TV Distribution Center). An administrative decision was then issued on Rajab 8 1418 H to amend the name to (Television Broadcast and Production Unit) and it follows Remote Learning Deanship.

Landmarks in the Television Broadcast and Production Center Quality teaching network for teaching techniques and skill development Comprehensive computer-aided teaching for remote and electronic learning Two professional studios (one digital, the other analog) designed for multifarious television production Professional audio studio for the production of audio programs using state of the art digital equipment Rooms, celebration and symposium halls, highly equipped with presentation systems, mobile podiums, translation, and sound and lighting facilities. 43 educational Studios for university lecture transmission A television library that houses about 1200 Television programs University Message (Resalat Al-Jameah) Newspaper The beginning of the University Message newspaper goes back to the period between 2 to 6/11/1394; at the beginning the newspaper was issued as the daily “Resalat Al-Jameah.” They were then the trial issues of the current newspaper; the first issue came out on 29/11/1359H. The printed issue came out every fortnight: 8000 copies were printed in the first year, and then the number rose up in 1396 to 13000 copies, 1600 copies in 1403 H., then 2400 copies in 1404. Today, almost 3000copies are distributed every week across the university, in the sectors of high education, and in the state and private Saudi universities. Of the most prominent aims of “Resalat Al-Jameah” is to train university students in general and the department students in particular in the field of journalistic works. The Saudi Association for Media and Communication The Saudi Association for Media and Communication was founded on 22/12/1421 H. in accordance with the decree issued by the Ministry of Higher Education. It is an academic association specialized in the field of media and communication; its headquarters are in the Department of Mass Communication at King Saud University in Riyadh. The first constituent assembly of the General Association was held in King Saud University on 22/11/1422 H., corresponding to February 5, 2002, when the first Management Council was elected t take responsibility of the Association. The association seeks to achieve the following: 1. Promoting of academic thought in the field of media and communication and developing such discipline 2. Doing research and specialized studies in the various areas of information in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 3. Promoting academic and professional communication among academics working in the field of information in the kingdom 4. Building bridges of collaboration between the association and its counterparts abroad 5. Developing professional performance and exchanging local, Arabic and international experience
Te Saudi Association for Media and communication holds an annual symposium during which members discuss research and studies that reflect contemporary media issues and concerns on the local, regional, and international levels. The association has held four major symposia, which are: 1. “Saudi Media , Characteristics of Reality and Future Trends” 2. “Image of Saudi Arabia in the World” 3. “Media Education and Training in the Arab World” 4. “Media and Crises: Principles and Strategies”
Membership is available for researchers, students, and Departments of Information faculty members who are interested in media studies. The Saudi Association for Media and Communication issues an academic journal specialized in media research and studies, titled “The Arabic Magazine for Media and Communication”. The first issue appeared in Shawwal/November, 2005.
